Coliving vs CROUS vs Flatshare in Lyon
There’s no single best option — only the one that fits your budget, your stay and how much admin you’re willing to handle in a new country. Here’s an honest comparison of the four routes international students take in Lyon.

CROUS halls — cheapest, hardest to get
State-run CROUS residences are the most affordable option (roughly €250–450). The catch: places are limited, allocated by social criteria, and there are long waitlists. Rooms are basic and often older, and as an international student you’re not guaranteed a spot. Great if you secure one early — unreliable to count on.
Private studio — independence, full cost
Your own studio means total privacy and independence. But you pay for all of it: rent plus utilities, internet and insurance, the furniture to buy and resell, the contracts to open and close, and — for many students — the isolation of living alone in a new city. It also faces the toughest guarantor and dossier checks.
Classic flatshare (colocation) — cheap base, real risks
A traditional flatshare splits a flat between tenants. The base rent is low, but watch the lease: many use a joint-liability clause (clause de solidarité), which can make you responsible for a flatmate’s unpaid rent if they leave. Flats are often unfurnished, and you collectively manage the utilities. Cheap and social, but more exposure and admin.
Coliving — the middle ground
Coliving keeps the privacy of a studio and the social side of a flatshare, without the downsides of either: a private furnished room, all bills included, an individual lease (no liability for flatmates), community built in, and Visale accepted so the guarantor problem disappears. It costs more than CROUS, less drama than a flatshare, and less total cost than a studio once everything is counted.
The deciding factor for most internationals
No French guarantor needed, nothing to furnish, one monthly price, and people already in the house when you land. For a one-year stay, that removes almost every pain point.
Which one suits you
- Tightest budget, planning far ahead → try for CROUS, but have a backup.
- Want total privacy and don’t mind the admin and cost → private studio.
- Cheap and social, comfortable handling a French lease → classic flatshare (read the solidarity clause).
- Want it simple, furnished, social and Visale-friendly → coliving.
